More Than Just a Poster

The reproduction of fine paintings has traditionally been through photo-offset lithographic printing.  This process involves using screens to deposit tiny dots of color on paper to create a copy of the original. Initial set-up costs are quite high, but the actual printing of each individual sheet is very low. As a result, only print runs of thousands or tens of thousands are economically feasible.  This is the method by which the inexpensive prints and posters are produced that sell at retail decorating stores, mall print sellers and framing shops. However cheap these prints are, they do not have the look or feel of real paintings. They are reproduced on paper; they fade; everybody has them. Even the finest screens available create a dot pattern that can be observed.

There is a more sophisticated process available.

The digital age has created a new method for reproducing fine art paintings.  Giclee (pronounced "zhee-clay")  prints look so much like original works of art that they can be truly mistaken for an actual painting. Inks (with 75 year fade-proof guarantees) are deposited on real canvas or watercolor paper in a continuous tone by means of  microscopically fine sprays. Canvas prints can even be embellished with paint by the artist so they will have true brushstroke texture. This process requires highly skilled technicians, expensive digital photographic equipment and takes longer to produce than traditional four-color lithography. However, small editions are feasible, thus making the resulting prints more valuable and unique.
